I. ADMINISTRATION

A. Welcome

The staff of Highland Rim Christian Academy (HRCA) extends a warm welcome to you as a part of our school family. Working together, we can make this a great year. Our objective is to provide the best education possible. This begins with teaching and reinforcing Biblical values, principles, and morals. Building godly character into the lives of our students is our #1 Goal. The School Of Tomorrow curriculum is recognized across the globe (110 countries) as an educational leader, providing quality and strong academics. We believe that Godly character and strong academics equal success.

B. Church Affiliation

HRCA is an interdenominational ministry serving Christ-centered education to the whole body of Christ. HRCA does not discriminate based on any Christ-centered denominations. HRCA's main objective is to focus on the similarities we share between Christ- focused churches, while avoiding denominationally dividing doctrines.

All employees are carefully selected based upon their commitment to Jesus and calling to work with children in a church school setting. Each staff member is dedicated to serve our students in educational training and helping each one find his/her way to a personal relationship with our Lord. Our staff is well trained in HRCA's philosophy and goals and annually attends teacher workshops and conventions to stay on the cutting edge of educational excellence.

II. ADMISSION POLICIES

A. Interview

Before a student is admitted there must first be an interview with the principal. Many times the student will be invited to come on a trial basis for a day to determine if the school and student are compatible.

B. Enrollment Packet

All forms and documents must be completed and financial arrangements made before any student is enrolled. Also, immunization records must be up-to-date and presented to the school before enrollment.

C. Non-Discrimination Policy

HRCA admits students of any race, color, and gender, national or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to the students of the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, athletics, or any other school administered programs.

D. Statement of Faith

These doctrines we believe and teach:

1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.

2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

3. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.

4. We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful people, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

5. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Godly life.

6. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

7. We believe in the act of water baptism as a direct command of our Lord for believers.

8. We believe in the Lord's Supper (communion), which symbolizes the Lord's death on the cross. The bread represents His body, the cup represents His blood.

9. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

E. Re-Enrollment

Students who desire to re-enroll should reapply before May 30. Those who wait until later will not be guaranteed a space. Also, it should be understood that no student has an automatic right to re-enroll, and that application for re-enrollment will be approved at the sole discretion of the school.

III. WITHDRAWAL POLICY

A. Right to Withdraw

The parent/guardian has the right to withdraw their child at any time, for any reason. Likewise, the school has the right, for any reason, to ask the student to withdraw. This provision is separate and apart from suspension or expulsion under the schools discipline policies. A student may be asked to withdraw for the following reasons: excessive tardies or absence, failure to respond positively to correction, disrespect to fellow students. However, the school is not limited to these reasons alone.

B. Transfer

Students who transfer to another school must have completed at least 12 PACEs in each core subject to be promoted to the next chronological grade. Any student completing 6 Paces in any subject will transfer 1/2 credit in said subject.

C. Refund Policy

HRCA has a "No Refund" policy on tuition and fees. This also includes early withdrawal, suspension, or expulsion.

IV. EXTENDED CARE

A. Hours/Cost

Regular hours for this school year will be from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Hours for extended care are 6:45 A.M. to 7:45 A.M. and 3:15 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Parents who wish to use our extended care program may do so for an additional fee. Students who are dropped off before 7:30 A.M. or not picked up by 3:15P.M. will be automatically placed in our extended care program. A fee of $5.00/day will be charged or a monthly fee of $60.00 for A.M. care and $100.00 for P.M. care.

B. Extended Hours

An additional charge of $5.00 per every ten minutes will be charged for pickups beyond 5:00 P.M.

V. FINANCIAL POLICIES

A. Tuition

Tuition is based on an annual budget of expenses. It is mandatory that tuition be paid in full and on time. Since our budget does not change if a student no longer attends, the full tuition is to be paid whether the student remains enrolled or not. Payment for tuition can either be monthly, semi-annually, or annually.

B. Fees

Refer to current tuition and fee schedule to obtain prices.

C. Parent Pledge

Tuition does not cover the cost for everything we need. In order to keep the cost low, we ask for your help in fund raising and/or donations. We ask each family to prayerfully consider assisting the school in these areas whenever possible over and above your tuition. We will attempt to keep fund raising to a minimum each year to reach our goals.

VI. GENERAL POLICIES

A. Church Attendance

The ministry of HRCA is a team effort with the home and church. It is therefore, strongly recommended that both parents and students faithfully support and attend a local Bible believing church of your choice. Regular church attendance is a vital part of the total education of each student.

B. Parental Involvement-

Parents are required to attend the MANDATORY PARENT ORIENTATION at the beginning of each year. Check with HRCA about dates and times for this Orientation. If mid-year enrollment occurs, a parent/staff orientation will be held. It is not the sole responsibility of the school to educate the child. The responsibility ultimately rests upon the parents. God designed it that way. The function of the school is to assist the parents in carrying out what God has given them to do. We, therefore, ask you to spend time with your child regularly reviewing their PACE work and social life at school. Parents are required to conference with the teacher each quarter and encouraged to attend field trips as often as possible. Please consider having lunch with your child at school and volunteering for school functions. Your child will feel special if you place a high priority on his/her education by personal involvement. HRCA encourages all parents to live and promote godly character at home and in their personal lives so as not to sabotage and confuse their children's character development. This also can either conflict or support the financial investment that the parents have and are making through the tuition expenses, depending upon what type of character the child is being taught in the home.

C. Arrival and Dismissal

1. Office Hours- Regular office hours are from 9:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Monday-Friday. Please conduct all business during these hours.

2. School Hours- 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

3. Please do not use the dismissal time to discuss school problems with your child's teacher. Parents who need to speak to teachers should pull out of the dismissal line, come inside and wait.

D. Attendance

There are 180 school days in a Tennessee School year. Students are expected to be present each day. All absences require a written note from the parent/guardian. If it is necessary for the student to leave school other than at the normal times, clearance with the school office must be obtained and the student signed out. The student will be considered absent when he/she comes to school after 11:00 A.M. or leaves before 11:30 A.M. Twenty days absence will mean being retained in chronological grade and no credit will be given for work completed. All exceptions must be accompanied by medical or judicial documentation.

E. Tardiness

Any student arriving more than 5 minutes after school hours begin will be tardy. Three tardies equal one absence. Ten or more tardies constitute a parent conference. This will be strictly enforced for all grades.

F. Early Dismissal

If a student is to leave early, the parent/guardian must come into the school and sign the student out. If the parent/guardian cannot come, then a written note signed by the parent/guardian, stating who will be responsible for the child upon pick-up, is required. A signature will be required from the responsible individual listed on the written note from the parent/guardian.

G. Use of Telephone

Students are not allowed to use the telephone unless it is an emergency as determined by a staff member.

H. Medication and First-Aid

The school is equipped with basic medication and first-aid supplies. The student is not allowed to have any medication or drugs of any kind in his/her possession or vehicle or on school property. All medication must be checked in at the front office when the student arrives at school. Medication will be administered as directed by the parent/guardian. If a student becomes ill at school, the parent/guardian will be called to come pick up the student. We ask parents not to send their child if he/she has a fever or is sick.

I. Student Vehicles

Those students who wish to drive their own vehicle to school may do so if they have a valid driver's license. The student must leave his/her vehicle immediately upon arrival at school and not return to the vehicle until dismissal. HRCA must have a written note from the parent/guardian giving permission for the student to drive to school. Also, if other students are riding to school, a note from both parents/guardians is required. Speed limit on school grounds is 5 mph. HRCA is not responsible for loss or damage to a vehicle or its contents while on school property.

J. Visitors

Parents are always welcome to visit during the day. We ask that you sign in at the front desk before proceeding to the learning center. Anyone we do not recognize must present identification before being allowed to proceed to the learning centers. If the parent/guardian wishes to see the principal and/or teacher, an appointment should be made in advance.

K. School Closing

School will be closed on many standard holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, parent conferences, and teacher training days. Please find the school calendar on the school's website or ask for a school calendar for all the closing dates. If inclement weather causes the Coffee County Schools to either close or dismiss early, we will do the same.

L. Personal Property

Unless authorized by school administration, students are not allowed to bring to school the following items: I-Pods, radios, CD players, CDs, cassette tapes, magazines or secular books. Gameboys or other handheld computer games will be permitted. However, all games must be screened by the supervisor in each learning center for game content. Under no circumstances are the following allowed: pagers, CELL phones**, gum, tobacco, alcohol, drugs or weapons. We have the right to search for such items on the student, and in pockets, purse, desk, book bag or automobile. A search may be conducted without the students' consent. The enrollment of your child constitutes parental consent to such searches. Also, if a student is suspected of drug use, the school has the right to ask the parents to have a drug test on their child and submit the results to the school. The cost of such testing will be the responsibility of the parents. The student can be withheld from class until such testing is complete and the results are sent to the school. If alcohol, tobacco, drugs or weapons are found, the student will be immediately dismissed. For other items found, the student will be subject to discipline and the items taken from them. **REGARDING CELL PHONES: If students bring cell phones to school, they must be turned off and handed in to the staff upon arrival. If a student is found to have a cell phone in their possession after school has begun, the phone will be confiscated by staff. Parent must come in to school to retrieve the phone. After 3 offenses, phone will be confiscated and not be returned to student or parent until the end of the quarter.

M. Lunch

Students may bring their lunch from home every day. A weekly menu from various local restaurants will be provided upon request at the beginning of the school year.

N. Birthday Parties

It is the policy of HRCA that any time invitations to parties are given out at school, that every student in the class will be included. If you choose not to invite the entire class, invitations should be mailed individually and not handed out at school.

O. Fire and Tornado Drills

Fire and Tornado Drills will be conducted periodically as required by law.

VII. DRESS CODE

A. Uniforms

General: All students will wear the official uniform. All uniform items are listed on the order form supplied by the office, or the uniform items may be obtained from any store the parent wishes.

Students are expected to be in uniform each day at school unless "special dress days" are planned. *For "Privilege Days" students may wear Christian T-shirts, School Shirts, or Plain (solid colored) T-shirts and jeans. *On days we have Field Trips, students may wear any HRCA shirt and Jeans unless regular school uniform is required. Uniforms must fit properly and meet the approval of the administration before the student is allowed to attend class. Any student not adhering to the Dress Code will be asked to leave the school to get the correct clothing or the parents will be asked to bring the clothing to school.

All students in Kindergarten or First Grade should bring and leave at school one outfit in case of emergencies.

Boys Uniform: Khaki Twill Dress Slacks*(No Denim Jeans or Cargo Pants}; Short and/or Long Sleeve Polo Shirts (excluding neons or stripes); Solid White or Dark Tennis Shoes, Leather Oxfords or Loafers - NO SHOES WITH OPEN TOES OR OPEN HEELS WILL BE PERMITTED. Boys are NOT permitted to wear their slacks half way down their buttocks. Belts ARE REQUIRED!! Tan, White, or Navy socks are permitted.

Girls Uniform: Full length Khaki Twill Dress Skirts or Slacks*(No Denim Jeans or Cargo Pants); Short and/or Long Sleeve Polo Shirts (excluding neons or stripes); (NO HIPHUGGER or LOW-RISE PANTS ARE ALLOWED) SOLID WHITE OR DARK TENNIS SHOES, Leather Oxfords or Loafers. NO SHOES WITH OPEN TOES OR OPEN HEELS WILL BE PERMITTED. Belts ARE REQUIRED!! Tan, White or Navy socks are permitted.

During cooler weather, students will not be allowed to wear long sleeve shirts under their uniform polo shirts. If warmth is an issue, students may wear a simple, solid Navy, Burgandy or White color sweatshirt over their polo shirt. No sweatshirts with hoods, pockets, or any other emblem besides HRCA will be allowed.

* Belts must be worn with Slacks and Shirts must be tucked in at waistline!!!

** Our students will be wearing MANDATORY Gym Uniforms for P.E. Order through HRCA ONLY.

B. Grooming

Hairstyles and color must be conservative, not draw attention, and meet the administration's approval. Hair must be neat, clean, combed or brushed. Male students must be clean-shaven and hair must be trimmed at neck, out of eyes, and above ears.

C. Jewelry

All jewelry must meet the administration's approval. It must be conservative in appearance. Examples: no tongue or lip rings, no earrings on male students, and girls will wear no more than two earrings in each ear. No gaudy earrings are allowed. Only small hoops or studs no larger than 2" in diameter may be worn.

VIII. STANDARDS OF CONDUCT

Since our conduct is a reflection of our character, we want our students to be well trained. The following is a list of behavioral standards expected of each student:

A. Courtesy

Students are expected to treat everyone with proper respect and to show proper deference to those in authority. Conduct such as talking back, sarcasm, complaining, gossiping, etc., will result in disciplinary action and could lead to corporal correction.

B. Classroom Behavior

Students are expected to conduct themselves in their classroom in a manner that is not disruptive or drawing unnecessary attention.

C. Cheating

This will not be tolerated! Anyone caught cheating will be dealt with quickly and firmly. It will result in corporal correction. Repeat offenses may be subject to dismissal

D. Stealing

Students are not allowed into others' possessions. This includes borrowing without permission. Students have their own private desks and no one (other than staff) is allowed to remove anything from it. Stealing will result in corporal correction. Repeat offenses will be subject to dismissal.

E. Vandalism

Each student has the responsibility to be good stewards of school property. Anyone who intentionally vandalizes any part of the property or building will be liable for all damages and subject to corporal correction or dismissal.

F. Language

Our language should always be uplifting and not offensive or disrespectful. The use of slang or street language will not be allowed at school. Use of such is subject to immediate dismissal or expulsion. Belittling other students is not acceptable.

G. Physical Contact

There is a six-inch rule that applies to all students. It means that no intentional, physical contact with other students is permitted.

H. Worldly Pursuits

Since our students reflect both our school and our God, it is necessary for each one to abstain from all appearances of evil. This applies while at school and away from school. Any student that is found to be out of harmony with the goals and standards of HRCA, regardless of whether the activity takes place at or away from school, is equally subject to discipline for those actions, up to and including expulsion. The Christian life is not a game with one set of rules for church and school, and another for everyday life.

IX. DISCIPLINARY POLICIES

A. POSITIVE INCENTIVES

1. MERITS: Merits are given for a variety of accomplishments and behaviors that the staff wishes to reward. Theses are redeemed at "merit sales" when students may make purchases of a variety of items with their merits.

2. PRIVELEGE LEVEL SYSTEM: A program to encourage students to stay on task, stay academically balanced and be the best they can be in every area. There are three levels of privelege for students to attain: A,C,E. All three levels must complete a minimum of 2 PACE's a week; maintain academic balance(not working farther in one subject than the others); accumulate no more than 45 minutes of detention for the preceding week; and memorization of previous week's Bible selection. In addition to these requirements, if student wants a higher privelege level, he/she must present a special monthly five-minute oral report or 1 page book report. Oral reports must be on a given subject from Teacher. Book reports must also be approved. The highest privelege level must also include engagement in some outside community service. Any student on privelege level may earn extra time for morning breaks, engage in approved extracurricular activities in office after daily goals are completed, may score without obtaining permission and may serve on approved projects. 3. OTHER INCENTIVES: A variety of other incentives are used, such as praise, trophies, ribbons, membership in the ONE THOUSAND Club, field trips, timeoff, Study Hall, Junior Honor Society, Debate Team, Yearbook Staff, etc.

B. NEGATIVE INCENTIVES

1. DEMERITS: Demerits are given to correct unacceptable acts or behaviors as follows (three or more demerits in a day result in Detention time.)(See C. below)

a. ONE DEMERIT is given for but not limited to the following:

Turning around in office
Disturbance in classroom
Running in the Learning Center
Chewing gum
Trespassing
Out of seat without permission
Messy Office
Leaning back in chair
Dress-code violation
Homework slip not returned
Corrective action slip not returned
Throwing objects
PACE left at home

b. TWO DEMERITS are given for but not limited to the following:

Goals not set
Unauthorized goal change
Talking at Testing Table
Negative attitude
Scoring violations per page

c. THREE DEMERITS are given for but not limited to the following: (Multiple offenses may result in corporal discipline or suspension)

Lying
Fighting
Filthy Language
Disrespect/Talking back
Defiance
Intentional Damage to any school property
Getting permission from another staff member after refusal by a first staff member

2. OTHER CORRECTIVE ACTION MEASURES

Administration and staff shall not be limited by the list of offenses in (1) above. Any non-Biblical conduct is subject to correction in a manner that is appropriate for correction. When a student receives eight or more demerits in one day, the student's parents will be notified, and a conference will be scheduled.

C. Detention Time: When a student must serve detention, they will be required to sit at their office AFTER school for a designated amount of time according to their offense. While detention is being served, they will be given an assignment to complete that has nothing to do with their normal school work. Normally, an essay pertaining to their offense will be required.

D. CORPORAL DISCIPLINE

1. All serious violations of rules that warrant corporal discipline shall be dealt with according to approved procedures.

2. All staff and sponsors of students (parent or legal guardian) and volunteers shall be informed of the corporal discipline policy and shall sign a statement of agreement with such policy.

3. No staff member or person entrusted with the care and education of the students of the school shall physically discipline or restrain a student unless failure to do so would jeopardize the safety of that child or other children.

E. PROCEDURE FOR CORPORAL DISCIPLINE

Highland Rim Christian Academy is honored that you have askied our staff to assist you in training your child for Christian leadership.  Our total program is designed to develoop the spiritual and academic qualities that characterize your child.  We appreciate your confidence in our program.  To carry out your wishes for total character development, we believe it is necessary to follow Scriptural admonition to correct a child when their behavior is in violation of proper reasonable rules and procedures.  When warranted, corporal correction will be exercised under one of the following two guidelines:

OPTION A:

Principal will discuss violation of school rules or misconduct with student.

With agreement of the need for corporal discipline, the Principal or Administrator will contact the appropriate parent or legal guardian indicating that there has been a serious violation of the rules or conduct that warrants application of a paddle. The parent or legal guardian will be required to come to the school the same day and to spank the child in the presence of the Principal or Administrator, or a staff member of the same sex as the child.

If this option is chosen, then failure of a parent or legal guardian to cooperate in the correction and discipline of a child may result in expulsion of that child. Enrollment and attendance at this school is a privilege granted to those who are willing to support the school's rules and total program.

OPTION B:

Principal will discuss violation of school rules or misconduct with student.

With agreement of the need for corporal discipline,  only the Principal or an Administrative Staff Member of the same sex will administer a reasonable number of firm strokes, not to exceed three, using the school's paddle.

Regardless of whether you choose OPTION A or OPTION B:

A staff witness will be present.

Your child will not be physically restrained.

After the strokes are given, the staff member will reaffirm your child.

A written report will be written of the date, offense, number of strokes, and name of correcting staff member and witness.  A copy will be sent to you.

X. ACADEMIC POLICIES

A. Grading Scale

Each student will work in PACEs in each of the core subjects, plus electives. At the conclusion of each PACE, a test will be given to measure the knowledge attained. The minimum score accepted is 90% on PACEs through level 3 and 80% thereafter. If less than the minimum is reached, a repeat PACE will be required to assure content mastery. The grading scale is: 80-83=D; 84-87=C; 88-93=B; 94-100=A.

B. Curriculum

We use curriculum provided by School of Tomorrow. It is individualized and custom-tailored for each student. Students work at their own pace and level so they can perform well. Seven-two (72) PACEs completed in a year is considered a full year's work. Students must have completed at least 12 PACEs in each core subject to be promoted to the next chronological grade. Because of the difficulty of some subjects such as Geometry, Physical Science and Chemistry, we will be sometimes supplement with other Christian curriculum.  This work will be given in assignments just as the Paces are.  It is strongly recommended that students who do not complete the required PACEs in each subject continue working during the summer to maintain their proper chronological grade level. Students who do not maintain academic balance will not be permitted to participate in any of our sports programs, clubs or privelege levels. Academic Balance means that the student is not further ahead in one subject than his/her other subjects. A student must complete 3 PACEs per subject per quarter. At the end of each quarter, student should have the same number of academic stars for each subject. If student is taking 5 subjects, he/she should have at least 15 stars by end of quarter; if 6 subjects, then 18 stars and so on.

C. Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements include three Math, four English, two Science, four Social Studies, one Bible, one Etymology, one Computer Literacy, one and one-half P.E.and one-half Health plus Electives. College preparatory curriculum includes all of the above plus two units of the same foreign language as well as one unit of fine arts, for a total of 25 credit hours. All seniors must complete all requirements assigned before participating in the graduation ceremony. All High School students and parents should request an up-to-date credit requirement and academic projection.

D. Homework

If a student fails to complete all assigned goals during the school day, he/she is required to finish them at home. A signed homework slip must be returned to school the next day along with the completed assignment. If homework is not completed, three demerits will be issued. The student will not be allowed to begin on current goals until all homework completed.

E. Bible

We use the New International Version of the Bible for our teaching and Scripture memory. Students need to bring their own Bible, preferably of the same version.

F. Scripture Memory

Each week a selected passage is given to the students to memorize. Each day we read and teach from that passage. During the week the student is required to recite to the teacher the entire passage by memory. It is vital that parents help their children learn the Word of God. It is strongly recommended that parents also memorize the passage to encourage their children to do so.

G. Chapel

Everyday our students participate in a worship service. We pray, read the Scripture, pledge to the flags, teach the Bible and encourage students to pattern their lives after Jesus. Students will be required to keep an Insight Notebook, taking notes related to Devotions during each day's assembly time. Our main purpose is to help each student find a personal relationship with our Lord. Parents are invited.

H. Progress Reports

Every quarter we have parent conferences to discuss the progress of the student. Parents are required to come to the school for this conference. This is the only way a progress report is given.

I. Field Trips

When field trips are taken, parents are always welcome to attend. Every student is required to attend field trips because this is part of our learning process. If a student does not attend a full-school field trip, they will be counted absent for the school day. Students are not permitted to "take the day off" by staying home. If a student does not qualify for the Honor Roll field trip, he/she can remain at school that day with a teacher.

J. Qualification for Extracurricular Activities: (See Attachment)**

To be involved in any sport, students must stay academically balanced and have each week's Scripture memorized and said on time.

IX. SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Students do not need large bulky notebooks. Basically, just a few pencils, thin 3-ring binder with looseleaf paper, pens (blue), and a pencil box are sufficient. A book bag is helpful to carry their PACEs home. Keep it simple! Please refer to supply list available on the school's website.

XII. MISCELLANEOUS

A. School Photographs

School photographs are taken each year and may be purchased. School uniforms or church clothes will be worn.

B. Pledges

Each day, everyone participates in the following pledges:

1. American Flag: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all

2. Christian Flag: I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again, with life and liberty to all who believe.

3. Bible: I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's Holy Word. I will make it a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path. I will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God.

XIII. CONCLUSION

It is our desire to be extremely clear about our school, policies, objectives and intentions. It is impossible to put into print every possible situation that might arise and therefore we reserve the right to modify this handbook at any time without notice. It should be noticed that we will always strive for fairness and in doing so; we must include an "exception policy". This means an exception in the policy for one is not meant as an exception in the policy for everyone else.
